  • This coup failed because the working class of Bolivia is well organized. Left political and labor leaders immediately announced that they’d shut down the country in the event of a coup, and told people to mobilize immediately. In the now famous picture of Arce yelling at the coup plotters, what is not visible is that the cops/military all around the city which backed the coup got surrounded, routed, and sent into a panicked full-sprint retreat within mere minutes by tens of thousands of people. Arce was able to have such aura because the plot was killed in the cradle. The immediate mass mobilization of regular people happened so fast that a lot of people don’t even realize it happened at all. The soldiers and police were routed and retreating before most news agencies could even be on the scene to report on it.

  • I’d like to see NYC-DSA actually try to test their influence in NYC right now by running Bowman as a write in candidate for the general. Obviously electoralism isn’t everything, but NYC-DSA has a reasonably strong ground game and mobilization in NYC and this is a real show-up or shut-up moment. As an organization that calls itself socialist, it can’t keep running candidates as democrats forever when the stakes have been raised to this point. The democrats have already proven they want to crush DSA and will throw as much money as necessary at the problem to do so.

NYC is a great place to try it if democrats really want such a dirty break with their left flank. Bowman’s district is the Bronx and Westchester, and a split vote could mean enough to at least make the Dems lose, which would be funny but also embolden left wing candidates/voters in one of the few places in the country that they command enough of the vote to change election outcomes.
