The reason the ‘So, your family suffered under “communism.” Why should I care?’ meme works so well is that the people communism oppressed were slaveowners, perpetrators and collaborators of genocide, and similar ghouls and/or goblins. You can’t really go and kill children with their mothers and laugh it off the same way, doesn’t work like that.
