    I don’t know what it is with Mozilla, they’re both the only saving grace of the open-source browser world and the most stupid internet company at the same time. And they’ve been both for decades, with a budget that could have allowed them to be and to do so much more…

      1. I don’t know why people think Mozilla is a “saving grace” of anything. One glance at their privacy policy proves otherwise.

      2. Mozilla has both a for-profit and non-profit arm, much like RPi (formerly) and OpenAI.

      3. I am fully in support of privacy-preserving ads. Much of the internet runs on ads. All your favorite YouTubers, favorite news sources, etc. are all survived by ads.

        This whole “for-profit owned by a non-profit” paradigm needs to globally crushed right the fuck now. It should never have been allowed to happen and should not be tolerated.

        I am fully in support of privacy-preserving ads. Much of the internet runs on ads. All your favorite YouTubers, favorite news sources, etc. are all survived by ads.

        I can tolerate ads, but I still wish we had a better financing model for content on the internet at large. Ad tech has a tendency to creep into places where it doesn’t belong. Like task bars, or explorers.

      While both signal and Firefox are lords work… The actual leadership appears to be some clowns. Both appears to be essentially here to maintain status quo where tech nerds get their fix but the fix doesn’t go mainstream. It is a fine line.

        I don’t know about Signal, but I’ve seen two non tech savvy people using Firefox in the wild.

      they are controlled opposition in my opinion, if you follow the money (i.e. financed primarily by google to my knowledge) and look at their current diversification in service offerings they appear to be ‘privacy-washed’ or ‘ethics-washed’ (for lack of a better term, the equiv. of greenwashing or pinkwashing for tech corps to appear ethical or progressive) with a push to appear as a feature-complete ‘privacy respecting’ alternative to google.

      in my opinion proton is doing the same thing, esp atm with their push towards non-profit status. openai (which is obviously not open in any sense od the word in the industry they operate in) is also i believe governed by a non-profit entity… or at least the for-profit part of their company is.

      non-profit status with larger organizations i think like any other large organization is not worth taking at face value, but idk someone here prob has a better handle on it than i do…

    So how long until our options in dodging the endless waves of shitty ads have completely gone? Sure, there might not be indication of it now, but it’s probably a safe bet that Mozilla will try and pull some of the same shit Brave did in regards to ads/adblocking.

    Thank fuck the internet as a whole is getting so shitty to the point it encourages us to go do something else. Turns out that avoiding the internet as a whole results in feeling a hell of a lot better about things in general.

    (I hope they do find a way to make this “for the best” – maybe reviving Scroll like technology + private advertising + actually checking to make sure advertisers are legitimate so you can pay to turn ads off on lots of websites and the ads aren’t leading to malware – but it’s very concerning in general)

    My unpopular opinion is I like ads, some are well thought, funny, and memorable.
    Ads in videogames which allow you to have a small boost are also amazing, I don’t have to spend money, just leave my phone for 30~60 seconds and I get a bit of premium currency while supporting the devs.

    The annoying/worrisome part is all the tracking the ads have, and the ones which are very invasive which take half of the screen.
    If we could go back to TV ads where everyone watches the ads without individual targeting, and with current technology to protect against hacking, and getting them in sensible places to not hide the content I would place and exception in my ublock and pihole for them.

      Are you aware that ads affect your mind and brain and hence influence the way you think and decide upon financial transactions?

      Ads are worse than you may think. Giving a buck to that dev is better for him than all those ads you “watch”.

        OC could watch 2 ads a day for 5 years and it still would make the dev less money than a $1 donation
